Michael Christopher Brown in Sicily

The American photographer Michael Christopher Brown (Magnum Photos, National Geographic, New York Times Magazine), the first photojournalist in the world to have made a photo report of the war (Libyan revolution of 2011) with the iPhone, will be in Catania next autumn to spend an artistic residence hosted by the Oelle Mediterraneo Antico Foundation. During his residency, Michael Christopher Brown will produce a specific reportage on the island entitled In Sicily, will hold a workshop on contemporary photojournalism, will participate in a scientific seminar and will inaugurate his personal photography exhibition, curated by Ezio Costanzo.
The residence

Michael Christopher Brown will go to the discovery of the island interpreting it with his narrative photographic language together with the sound engineer Michele Spadaro.
The workshop participants will join his journey.
The Workshop
From 1 to 4 October 2021
Limited number, 25 participants. In the classroom and outdoors, with a final reading of the portfolios.
The workshop, which will start on October 1, 2021, is aimed at photography professionals and students. The main theme will be the profession of the photojournalist in the era of great technological, multimedia and digital changes, relating to both the shooting tools and the dissemination and sale of images. Brown’s experience will also be valuable for learning the aspects related to the conception and preparation of the photo report, the choice of the narrative model and the logistical and organizational aspects.

A complete and engaging seminar that will address the themes of visual storytelling from its origins to the present day, passing through the technological evolution of the means of shooting and the work of the great photographers of the twentieth century. The speakers will focus on the historical but also current aspects of reportage photography, with particular attention to the elements linked to communication and the dissemination of images via the web. In the seminar, Brown will be joined by teachers Alberto Castelvecchi (Effective communication and public speaking), Ezio Costanzo (Photoreportage and History of Reportage) and Carmelo Nicosia (Photography).

Retrospective by Michael Christopher Brown
With an international preview of the A More Beautiful World project

In the retrospective, curated by Ezio Costanzo, Brown will exhibit the reports made in the various theaters of local wars, on behalf of the Magnum agency and other international newspapers, where the author immortalized the violence of conflicts and the existential conditions of civilian populations . The exhibition will host photographs that will also include the international preview of the “A more beautiful world” project, a real mission for the protection of the planet, which Brown is carrying out by documenting the plagues that afflict the Earth today but also the aspects they offer a hope for human survival.
Photographs of reports on Libya, Cuba, China, Africa, Palestine, Afghanistan, America and recent social conflicts in the United States will be exhibited. An area of the exhibition will be dedicated to the reportage that the author will make during his residency in Sicily.
