The Palio of San Martino

November 12 - November 13

The palio of San Martino poster

In Castell’Umberto, in the province of Messina, San Martino is celebrated on 12 and 13 November with the race of the barrels and with the enhancement of the typical products of the Nebrodi territory.

Teams from all over Italy face each other in a race full of adrenaline-fueled competition. The competition takes place over two heats; the first serves to establish the starting order on the grid in the second heat. The event, part of the celebrations dedicated to San Martino, beyond the competition tends to enhance and promote the typical products of the entire Nebrodi area.

You will also be able to discover, thanks to this event, Castania, a corner of Sicily that smells of the past: old sandstone houses and flowered views; the ruins of the Byzantine castle with its tower, the church of Santa Barbara and that of San Francesco, U Chianu in vucciria, the sixteenth-century oil mill (restored) and the ancient church of San Vincenzo Ferreri, transformed into an open-air auditorium .

There is never a lack of tasting of typical products such as macaroni with pork sauce and frittuli, a poor dish obtained from the use of pig waste, including head, legs, heart and rind.
