Agriturismo in Palazzolo Acreide, place of peace and serenity
Road framed by high bastions of white stone, barren vegetation among olive trees, carob trees, prickly pear blades and expanses of meadows, all found in our new experience visiting an Agriturismo located in Palazzolo Acreide, an estate surrounded by greenery overlooking the valleys and old farmhouses, including the Bibia farmhouse, the ancient house of barons. Arriving at the Borgo we were catapulted into a place of peace and serenity, where the luxuriant nature and the dry white stone walls frame some small old farmhouses where you can enjoy a real Sicilian stay. The Borgo offers 14 residential units and 2 villas spread over a large area. To complete the frame, a swimming pool that immediately makes you want to dive in and a restaurant with typical Sicilian cuisine worthy of note.
A day full of tradition thanks to the presence of a young talent famous all over the world for having perpetuated the ancient craft handed down to him by his grandfather, to whom he made a great gift dedicating himself with immense passion to the creation of “sanfurricchi”, candies entirely handmade, with centenary tools: the only ingredient used, “millefiori” honey. To master it the physical strength necessary to reach the finished product, it must be beautiful to look at and have a great taste. A boy with great courage, Marco, who decided to leave a well-paid job to carry on the family tradition, which is to date the only one present in Sicily!
This day was dedicated to a 360-degree sensorial discovery. In fact, there was also a dairy company of the area, which offered a tasting of its own km 0 dairy products, explaining to the most curious the techniques necessary for storing the cheese for a long time; and certainly, we could not miss the tasting of extra virgin olive oil, offered in turn by an oil mill in Cassaro, a small village in the Iblei mountains. A delight for our palate!!!
After lunch in the name of Sicilian tradition and a friendly chat, we ended our day in Palazzolo Acreide with a master of the art of weaving and his partner, from whom we learned the importance of aromatic herbs and their various uses, both in the kitchen and as remedies for health.
With them, we learned to weave and create wicker baskets, rings, bracelets, earrings, and necklaces with olive and other branches, an activity that involved the entire group present that day. All this took place while the “Cestaio Matto” – as he likes to define himself – delighted us by performing his poems in Sicilian dialect, many of which were dedicated to the female audience present, who was so entranced by the atmosphere created that they no longer wanted to leave!
Full of new friendships and the “artisan jewels” we made to help us get more in touch with this magical world, we returned home full of joy and emotion for having spent a wonderful day discovering new Sicilian places and traditions!
We are ready for a new experience …. and you?
